Surface Marker Buoys serve a range of purposes. They are used to: Allow boat support to identify an ascending diver or provide a visual reference for ascending divers.
Surface Marker Buoys are popular for use in areas with heavy boat traffic, or where divers may be drifting in a current.
What do I need to start?
Open Water Diver (or equivalent)
Minimum Age:12 years old
What will I do?
Demonstrate correct stowage of SMB and reel prior to dive
Launch delayed SMB from stationary position on the bottom
Conduct a tour whilst towing the SMB on the surface, whilst demonstrating the ability to reel in and reel out
Ascend using line as tactile reference and make a safety stop
Safely deploy a delayed SMB whilst hovering

2 dives – may be conducted in 1 day
