The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program is your final step in the quest to become a PADI Instructor. During the IDC, you'll learn to use and adapt the PADI System of diver education to individual student needs. Comprehensive training, supported by a wide variety of PADI educational materials, earns PADI Instructors respect from both students and peers. PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors may conduct a broad range of PADI programs from Discover Scuba to Divemaster. |

PADI Instructors may conduct the entire range of PADI programs - from Discover Scuba through Divemaster. |

Options include |
|
- PADI Divemasters may choose to attend just the AI course.
- PADI Divemasters may attend all components that make up the IDC (7-day minimum) and, upon successful completion, go on to a PADI Instructor Examination (as long as all other IE prerequisites have been met).
- PADI Assistant Instructors may attend the OWSI program and, upon successful completion, go on to an IE (as long as all other IE prerequisites have been met).
- Scuba instructors affiliated with other certification organizations may attend an OWSI program and, upon successful completion, go on to an IE.
- Scuba instructors or dive supervisors affiliated with other certification organizations may choose to attend an entire IDC and, upon successful completion, go on to an IE.

What will I need to start? (Pre- requisites) |
|
- Be certified as a PADI Divemaster or hold a leadership level certification with another recreational diver training organization.
An individual with leadership level certification with another diver training organization can be:
- An instructor member in good standing with one of the following organizations: BSAC (Club Instructor or higher), CMAS (one star Instructor or three star diver), FAUI, IDEA, Los Angeles County, MDEA, NAUI, PDIC, SSI, SAA (Instructor Grade 2 or higher) or YMCA (others may qualify – contact PADI for verification).
- Or, a diver with proof of certification in diver supervision and management including proof of rescue diving certification.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Be fit for diving and submit a Medical Statement for a diving medical examination conducted within the past12 months. A licensed physician must sign the form and state that the candidate is fit for diving. The physician signing the form may not be the applicant.
- Have been a certified diver for at least six months and have completed and logged at least 60 open water scuba dives (as documented in the individual’s log book) and have documentation of experience in deep, night and navigation diving.
- Submit proof of CPR and first aid training within the last 24 months.
- Submit documentation of any equivalent certification for entry-level, advanced, rescue and leadership-level issued by another recreational diver training organization. (PADI Members who have these records on file at PADI do not need to resubmit.)
- If not a PADI Divemaster, successfully complete the PADI Divemaster course diver rescue skills assessment.

Independent Learning Prerequisite |
|
Prior to the start of an Instructor Development Course, Assistant Instructor course or OWSI program, an individual must complete all (16) IDC Knowledge Reviews.
Completing Knowledge Reviews may be accomplished by self-study. (Completion of Standards Exam and Theory Exam in Candidate workbook is also recommended)
Pre-study may also occur through staff led pre-course sessions. IDC Staff Instructors or Course Directors may guide instructor candidates through reading assignments and help them with understanding PADI standards, educational philosophy, training suggestions and other background information. It’s recommended a minimum of two days be set aside for this pre-study option. |

Equipment Requirements |
During open water scuba training, instructor candidates must equip themselves with:
Fins, mask, snorkel, cylinder, buoyancy control device with low pressure inflator, regulator, alternate air source, submersible pressure gauge, weight system (if necessary), appropriate exposure protection, timing device, depth gauge, compass, knife/diver’s tool, Instructor slates, dive tables and an 2 emergency signaling device (visual and audible.)
